Coursera launched its first LLM-powered agent, Coach, in 2023. I brought this early attempt up to date with the latest interaction patterns for LLM chats in 2026.
I designed dozens of UI components to meet existing and future use cases across the learner, admin, and authoring experiences. I also defined a set of Generative AI Design Principles to guide designers and PMs through the prioritization and definition of usable, transparent, and impactful LLM features.
Coursera LLM Chat Components
Removed the previous “Coach” character and updated the visual language
Designed a new chat panel that can be full screen, embedded, or in a mobile drawer
Added dynamic inputs like single or multi-select questions, suggested responses, and context attachments
Added inline cards and LLM-powered embeds to be used outside of chat
Gnerative AI Design Principles and Playbook
Defined Generative AI Design Principles and illustrated their applications throughout the platform
Built out full component library and “Playbook” to show examples of how the components should be used to cover current and future use cases
